Image Appraisal and Photographic Competition Judging

Southern Counties Photographic Federation (SCPF) and East Anglia Federation (EAF) Accredited Judge.

Member of the SCPF Judging Advisory Team.

I am a photographic judge accredited with the SCPF and the EAF and I also provide image critique.

I have been judging since 2019, I have bases in East London and West Sussex and judge live in London, Essex, Hertfordshire, Surrey, Sussex, and Hampshire. I also zoom judge across the UK. To date I have completed over 100 assignments around the country.

My approach

My approach is based on photography as a visual language and I have a strong interest in the psychology behind composition. I try to incorporate this into my feedback, try to add an element of objectivity into it. I don’t believe in the existence of rules …. it is all choices and visual consequences. I believe that judging should be about helping photographers grow and develop.

Feedback below.

Feedback

“ … I thoroughly enjoyed your judging for Norwich & District PS on Tuesday. Educational, constructive, concise and fair, delivered in an entertaining manner. Quite the best judge I can recall…. “

“….You really have a gift for clearly explaining the reasoning behind your comments and we all appreciated that.  You'd clearly spent some time looking at our work beforehand, because your observations were invariably spot-on.  There was also plenty of practical advice on how to improve our images, and that was refreshing - it can only help us get better….”

“….Your feedback was so positive and constructive, like a masterclass in analysing images - and a refreshing change from many of the judges on the 'camera club circuit'…..”

“…what you showed last night was so refreshing & so non camera club! Your style of judging was the best I've seen in all my 32 years at the club! All in all bloody awesome!!!!…”

“…A million thanks for judging and your detailed comments on our members’ images last week. Your observations were very helpful and quite refreshing from the usual "blown highlights" and "not enough detail in the shadows" type comments….”

“….I have had loads of really good feedback [from our club members] and we especially liked how you managed to make us all think again and see our images with a different eye. G summed it up nicely when he said "It wasn't just a judging we have had tonight, it was an education", and I wholeheartedly agree.’’’’”

“….Your more intellectual and analytical approach to seeing an image was a refreshing change from our more normal judges….”

and about a 7 way interclub competition … “they are still all in shock at having a judge who knows what she is talking about”
